In the wake of film composer Angelo Badalament’s passing, his long-time friend and collaborator, David Lynch uttered, ‘Today, no music’. Music, and sound itself, has always served as the emotional rudder of visual media. Its presence moves us. We sing aloud lyrics in the shower or learn to play them on the piano. We associate them with people, places, feelings, moments of time that all move to its powerful rhythm. Yet when absent, it unsettles us. Scenes are stilted and anxiety-producing in the void of sound. How is music mediated by visuals? What kinds of relationships do we have to music? How does music speak (or sing) to you?
